Meet Robyn: 2017 Heart of Her recipient

Women facing a crisis have three choices: Let it define you, let it destroy you or let it strengthen you. As a survivor of domestic violence, Senior Director Robyn Ochoa-Costa has found strength by taking a stand and becoming a role model for not only her three daughters, but for all women facing abuse. On her path to empowerment, Robin discovered a domestic violence shelter she now calls her heart and passion: The Hartley House.

Protection, advocacy and hope

The Hartley House in Clovis, New Mexico, has been supporting women and children since 1979. This non-profit organization comprises a dedicated group of individuals working within Clovis and surrounding communities to help put an end to domestic violence. The shelter provides physical and emotional refuge to victims of abuse and advocates freedom from violence through education, intervention and treatment.

Robyn was first introduced to the organization years ago when she received a flier after an incident of abuse. She became personally involved by attending numerous events, donating door prizes for fundraisers and helping those in need. She also designed the shelter’s Facebook page to help reach more women online.

Robyn now serves on the Board of Directors as Secretary and Nomination Committee Chair, organizing and overseeing elections, reviewing board membership applications, conducting interviews, updating print materials and doing everything she can to help women just like her.

A commitment to service

Giving back is one of the most important aspects of Robyn’s life. She approaches every day with the mindset that she can change the world. Whether it’s with a smile, kind word, hug or token of appreciation, she wants to impact the world in a positive way – one person at a time.

“It’s not the grand gestures so many think it is,” says Robyn. “It’s who you are and how you lead your life.”

When it comes to giving, Robyn believes it comes from a place of love and not a place of recognition.

“Her attitude is the real bonus,” says Robyn’s sister, fellow Thirty-One Consultant and Heart of Her Award nominator Felicity Lueras. “She is always real with us and posts on her team page to discuss struggles and successes. Robyn is the most loving and sincere person I know and is the only reason I joined the Thirty-One sisterhood.”

Robyn truly believes every woman can impact the world in her own way. She constantly encourages her team members to step up and be the change they want to see in the world.

“Find your passion and what speaks to your soul,” Robyn says. “Find ways to get involved that speak to that passion. Use what you have and do what you can, but do it with love!”

Robyn is a true leader, guiding others and setting an example through passion, service and dedication. In addition to promoting her own Thirty-One business, she also takes the lead in helping the women within her team find success. She starts by taking the time to get to know each one of her team members on a personal level.

“Being a leader with Thirty-One is about more than the title,” says Robyn. “Being a leader means that I get to celebrate, encourage and reward other women. It means that I have a chance to help them see their potential.”

Thirty-One celebrates and honours Robyn’s mission to help change the lives of women for the better, whether it’s through building them up and encouraging them to become successful with Thirty-One, or connecting them with the help they need and working to end domestic violence through the Hartley House. We congratulate Robyn on being named the Heart of Her winner for 2017!
